Dogeared founder and designer Marcia Maizel-Clarke leads an energetic and growing design team that looked to the natural world for much of their inspiration this season. New jewel collections, including Light as a Feather and Precious Medals, as well as line extensions for existing collections such as Seeds and Karma, reflect, at times, a 70's style depiction of nature. Dogeared has also expanded into new product categories with candles and lingerie.
Light as a Feather, which features three sizes of hand cast sterling silver and gold dipped feathers in a line of necklaces, bracelets and earrings, on chain, leather cord, deer skin and Irish linen recalls a "groovy" time period when feathers were a frequent accessory. Dogeared‘s feathers, an emerging fashion trend, has a hip look while retaining their symbolic meaning of celestial wisdom, accession, speed and truth.
Precious Medals provides a brand new look for Dogeared. Round sterling silver and gold dipped discs with eight different cut outs hang from either a chain or a 50" deerskin strap. Silhouettes of a tree, seagull, a dragonfly –a symbol of good luck, prosperity, peace and harmony-and the western hemisphere make a bold statement individually or layered.
"For 17 years Dogeared has been exploring our sources of inspiration, and this season we focused in on motifs that reflect the beauty of our planet," explains Marcia Maizel-Clarke.
"Mother Nature needs our care and consideration, and many of our pieces acknowledge that plea. We have even added a new earth charm and a necklace, What a Wonderful World, where the profits will be donated to organizations that work to heal our earth. Our growing line of natural canvas totes and our new eco-friendly candles also reflect our desire to be kind to the planet." |
What a Wonderful World, a sterling silver or gold dipped charm on an 18" chain, comes on a printed card with the message:
Let this necklace be a daily reminder to be kind to
our environment, our planet and each other.
A companion design in this theme, Peace on Earth, features two charms – earth and a peace symbol and offers this sentiment:
Peace on Earth.
Let this necklace be a reminder that peace
is within our reach. Let's hold hands, Sing
Kumbaya, and make it happen! |
"Peace is our constant inspiration and aspiration," continued Maizel-Clarke. "Dogeared was founded on our belief in the power of words, charms, wishes and dreams, and we are developing our best-selling line of peace jewels not only as a fashion category, but as part of the growing, world-wide chant for peace. This yearning for peace coupled with the desire to save our planet is what it will take to change the course."
The extensive, new Jewel Box collection has been in development for several years and launches this season. Cabochon gems, newly designed hand-cast animal charms, faceted coins and seed pearls are some of the elements in this collection. Again, the animal symbolism adds an additional dimension to the message. Bees – symbolic of industry and planning ones own destiny, owls – symbolic of wisdom, mastery and messages, and snakes – symbolic of rebirth and healing, root the collection in the historic function of amulets and ornamentation.
Jewel Box features fashion jewelry that reflects the personality and uniqueness of the wearer, and has the following sentiment on the printed cards:
You exude lasting beauty, strength and grace.
Your jewel box tells your story. Make it good.
"What we wear puts out a message to the universe," continues Maizel-Clarke. "Fashion and trends evolve, dissolve and are reinterpreted, but with jewelry, we are firmly linked to our collective past, to our rich symbolic traditions, and in our belief that we – along with our jewelry -- can affect our destiny. "
Dogeared's 2008 Fall Collection takes this concept to the extension of current best selling lines, including Karma, Peace, Chakras, Pearls of... and Healing Gems. Karma has grown into a substantial collection with numerous designs, sizes and textures. This season launches branch-textured karma charms, and a romantic line of Lotus Karma pieces, Pearls of...includes new colors and styles, Healing Gems are now offered in rondelle and large styles, and the Chakra Collection comes on colorful, newly designed cards.
The company is also adding texture to the collection with two new product categories: eco-friendly candles and sassy, giftable panties.
The Wish Big candles, a new initiative, extends Dogeared's green category and are made with soy wax and essential oils, come in recycled glass jars or travel tins, with cotton wicks and are packaged in recycled boxes printed with acid-free soy ink. The five scents include mmm, yummy (orange and lemongrass), fire it up (ylang ylang and nutmeg) and inhale/exhale (frankincense and patchouli) and are guaranteed to burn at least 45 hours.
"A great source of good energy is laughter," concludes Maizel-Clarke, "and at our design meetings we have lots of creative outbursts. This is where Sassy Pants came from. We were brainstorming on what we liked to give our friends, what was fun, girly and loaded with attitude, and Sassy Pants were born! With graphics of wing hearts and green lights and sassy-sayings including Wish Big, Knocked Up and Period Panty, we think we now have the perfect gifts for all our girlfriends."
Dogeared Jewels & Gifts' 2008 fall collection is inspired by the company mission of "putting good energy into the world one jewel at a time." Retail prices range from approximately $25 to $295. The collection is featured in a 108 page wholesale catalog that is printed on recycled paper and viewable online at www.dogearedwholesale.com.
Dogeared Jewels & Gifts
When designer Marcia Maizel-Clarke recognized the need for jewelry that speaks, she founded Dogeared Jewels & Gifts in 1991 and she created the original word jewelry and charms. The response to these and the success of the Make a Wish series of necklaces gave birth to a trendsetting, innovative family of products that capture the magic of words, symbols, wishes and dreams, a magic that has attracted international attention. Dogeared's unique, custom cast jewels are regularly featured in fashion, lifestyle, and celebrity publications, in films and in television shows. Dogeared is sold by trendsetting retailers around the world, including Nordstrom, Fred Segal, Sundance, and Intuition. All Dogeared products are handcrafted in Los Angeles. |
